Battle Royal! Mongolian wrestlers set to takedown City Councilman, SJSU grapplers in public match at The Tech Museum

A burly band of "bukhs," from Mongolia will storm The Tech Museum Tuesday to demonstrate the traditional martial art that Genghis Khan used to keep his vast armies combat ready. A dozen 300-pound Mongolian men skilled in the ancient art of folk wrestling will also take on a few brave special guests including San Jose Councilman Pete Constant and grapplers from the San Jose State University wrestling club. The colorful exhibition is the most important part of the Mongolian culture's historic "Three Manly Skills," that also includes horsemanship and archery, and plays a key role in their sacrificial rituals and festivals. The matches traditionally take place at the end of July or early August during the festival of Naadam, but The Tech Museum and Team San Jose are proud to host their very own wrestling match in the spirit of Genghis Khan, who is being featured as part of the museum's blockbuster Genghis Khan: The Exhibition. The power and ability of Mongolian wrestlers is world renowned in addition to their embodiment of ancient values of strength, nobility and sportsmanship. Second Secretary of the Embassy of Mongolia Dawadash Sambuu will be on hand to share the rules and techniques to this skillful art while describing the traditional outfits that include the Jodag, Shuudang, and Gutal.
