New Science of Sport Exhibit at The Tech Museum Turns Visitors Into Players!

Press Release Date
Monday, 26 November, 2001
A new traveling exhibit, Science of Sport, is set to hit the ground running at The Tech Museum of Innovation in downtown San Jose. The exhibit, which runs from February 8 to April 21, 2002, examines the influence that science and technology have on the sporting endeavor. Science of Sport transforms museum visitors into players. The exhibition is full of fun, interactive and educational components that encourage players to become part of the action. Players test their skills on some of the most advanced, large scale, "body-on," interactive exhibits. "Science of Sport combines the fun and benefits of sports with the physiology and technology that make it happen," says Tech President and CEO Peter Giles. "Families will find their hearts racing and blood pumping in the middle of a science lesson!" The sports featured in the interactive exhibits include track, volleyball, rock climbing, and soccer. Each sport has its own interactive component, which gives players a chance to experience the sport for themselves. Players compete in a virtual race against an elite athlete, play virtual volleyball with up to 10 people, scale a rock climbing wall, and attempt to make a penalty kick on a virtual soccer field. While at the exhibit, players also learn about diet, vision, physiology, footwear and various types of protection for athletes in different sports. Get a readout of your ideal height to weight ratio, test your peripheral vision and see how high you can jump. To go along with the new exhibit, The Tech will also feature sports related activities and speakers throughout Science of Sport's run. Some of the activities will include signing and sporting opportunities with local sports celebrities, special WOW! Weekends, talks given by physical therapists and coaches and much more! Science of Sport was developed by the Science Museum of London. Prior to being at The Tech, the exhibit has toured at the Maryland Science Center and the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago. The Tech Museum of Innovation is a non-profit educational institution that engages people of all ages and backgrounds in exploring and experiencing the technologies affecting their lives and aims to inspire the innovator in everyone. It is located at 201 S. Market St. San Jose, CA 95113-2008. For general information, call (408) 294-TECH or visit www.thetech.org.
