Silicon Valley's Best Gamers to Duke It Out on IMAX Screen

The Tech Museum's Maxgames to draw video gamers of all ages Hundreds of video game players will converge at The Tech Museum of Innovation in San Jose on Thursday, August 15 for the inaugural Maxgames competition. Gamers will move through a series of qualifying rounds playing with standard consoles using large screen televisions. The final four competitors in five featured games will duke it out on the IMAX Dome screen using the theatre's 13,000-watt, six-channel, 44 speaker sound system. This is the first time that video games will be played on an IMAX Dome. The all-day tournament includes the top video games for the Microsoft Xbox, Nintendo GameCube and Sony PlayStation2 consoles. The all-ages game competition runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., followed by a mature game competition and party from 6 p.m. until the conclusion of the event. "One-third of Americans identify video game playing as their most fun entertainment activity," said Peter Giles, The Tech's president and CEO. "We want to tap into this audience, bring them into The Tech, and spark their imaginations through this one-of-a-kind tournament." The competition includes the three most popular gaming consoles. Microsoft Xbox games include Project Gotham Racing, Halo, Tony Hawk, DOA3 and NFL Fever. GameCube games include Super Monkey Ball, Soccer Slam and SSX Tricky. Playstation2 games include Gran Turismo and Virtua Fighter 4. The tournament will also include a panel discussion and Q&A session with leading game designers, t-shirts and a pizza lunch by Tony and Alba's. Prizes will be awarded to top finishers in each of the games. Registration is $25 for everyone/teen games and $30 for mature games. Tech Members get a $10 discount on the registration fee.
