NEW PERMANENT EXHIBITS

Genetics: Technology With A Twist – Now Open
Explore the forefront of emerging genetic technologies by taking on the roles of genetic counselor, scientist and even a policymaker. Understand the new opportunities genetic research has provided, and face personal and social choices that arise from the intimate knowledge of what we are made of. With new Tech Tags, visitors can even grow bacteria in our wet lab, post findings to their very own website, and track their experiment's progress online days later.

Silicon Workshop – Opens May 28, 2004
Be inspired by Silicon Valley's innovations. Enter your own workshop and design products using microchips, and by programming smart devices. Make an automatic fish feeder, program a toy, and engineer your own car! Explore the world of microchips and discover the innovator in you.

Engineer It!, now through September 6, 2004
How do you design a tall building to withstand an earthquake, construct a boat that always floats, make an airplane's wing stable, or build an arch bridge with no visible means of support? In Engineer It!, visitors of all ages will solve these, and more, real-world problems in interactive, hands-on environments like water tanks, earthquake simulators and even wind tunnels. Engineering principles are presented as an open-ended discovery process; think it, build it, test it...

The Tech is April's Museum of the Month
Throughout 2004, San Jose's premier museums are offering free or discounted admissions as part of Museum of the Month 2004. In April, we celebrate The Tech! Members of participating museums are encouraged to experience all The Tech offers, including new exhibits like Engineer It! and Genetics: Technology With A Twist.

17th Annual Tech Challenge: Pike Season at The Tech
Non-native Northern Pike have invaded Lake Davis, and this year's Tech Challenge teams are solving the problem in the most innovative ways! Test trials take place weekends through April 2004, and the big competition to procure those pesky pike from our Lake Davis simulator runs all day Saturday, April 24. It's Tech Challenge's 17th anniversary, and you don't want to miss any of the action. Join the fun...pick a pike.

Celebrate Earth Day at The Tech, April 17, 2004 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
Join us for a workshop on how the U.S. can transition from its dependence on oil to the use of clean energy in our cars, homes, industries, and government. Discuss the use of alternative fuels in motor vehicles, factors that have held up alternative fuel source development, and promising alternative sources for electricity generation. Author and California Hydrogen Business Council board member John Addison, will lead the discussion. Free with paid museum gallery admission; registration is now open. Co-presented by The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at UC Santa Cruz Extension.

Gizmo WYSIWYG Auction Gala at Yahoo!, May 7, 2004

Space Day Returns to The Tech on May 8, 2004
Space Day returns with some old favorites, and new topics of exploration! Learn how Sputnik and the Arms Race to the Moon impact our spirit of innovation. Also, discover how Nanotechnology will affect NASA Missions to our Solar System. Want to go to Mars? What has been learned from the latest rover missions and what might be the next steps? Visit and find out! Try your hand at the Martian Drop & Roll Design Challenge or the Future of Flight Multimedia Presentation from NASA Ames Research Center.

Ongoing: Segway Human Transporter
You've seen it in the news, now try it out yourself! Take a ride on the Segway Human Transporter, daily from 2-3 p.m. *Riders must be over 16 years old and weigh between 100 and 250 pounds*

Second Sundays are Free, Thanks to SBC
SBC and The Tech are offering free unlimited gallery admission to the community the second Sunday of every month throughout 2004! This is a great opportunity to explore the technologies impacting your life. Experience new exhibits like Genetics: Technology with a Twist, Engineer It!, and so much more! With interactive, hands-on exhibits and floor programming, there's something at The Tech to inspire the innovator in everyone.

"Nikkon International Small World" Exhibit at The Tech – June 14, 2004 to July 23, 2004
Get a glimpse into a world that most have never seen, except through the lens of a microscope, when viewing the award-winning photomicrographs in the "Nikkon International Small World" exhibition. This free exhibition will be located in The Tech's New Venture Hall.

"The Fusion of Art and Technology" arrives in June 2004
Join us for a "Tech Chat" this June on the amazing ways that Bay Area artists are utilizing technology in the expression and creation of art. Presented in partnership with UCSC Extension's Osher Lifelong Learning Institute and Zero One.
