Surgery, Through September 1, 2003 Children and adults alike become surgeons for a day - using the latest technologies to zap tumors, correct vision, and break up kidney stones. Interactive and multimedia exhibits demonstrate the basic science concepts behind some of the fastest-growing surgical techniques used by medical professionals today: lasers, endoscopes, ultrasound, cryosurgery and the Gamma Knife. CURRENT IMAX FILMS Top Speed: Top Speed is a dynamic montage of awe-inspiring individual performances and new technologies that graphically illustrate the science of speed. Principles such as gravity and velocity come alive through stories of people pursuing speed: Marion Jones, the fastest woman in the world; Marla Streb, top downhill mountain-biker; Lucas Luhr, racing driver in the American LeMans series; and Stephen Murkett, designer of the Porsche Cayenne. Starring and narrated by Tim Allen. Lost Worlds: Life in the Balance: Embark on a global exploration of the fascinating interconnectedness of all living things. Join narrator Harrison Ford on an adventure from the arctic to the equator. Tunnel into a metropolis of micro-organisms beneath New York, swim through the underwater forests of the Pacific, and climb to the top of the mysterious mountains in Venezuela. Also showing: Coral Reef Adventure SPECIAL EVENTS AND PROGRAMS Ongoing: Segway Human Transporter You've seen it in the news, now try it out yourself! Take a ride on the Segway Human Transporter, daily from 2-3 p.m. * Riders must be over 16 years old and weigh between 100 and 250 pounds.* Ongoing through end of July: Virtual Reality Experience The Tech debuts its first-ever Virtual Reality Experience. Guests will experience and interact with the world's scientific discoveries using the same SGI technology that leading researchers depend on for ground-breaking discoveries in medicine, archeology, and astronomy. July 12: IMAX Adventure Traveler Series - Lewis and Clark Set off on THE American adventure as we celebrate the bicentennial of Lewis and Clark's historic three-year trek across the American continent. See the beauty and majesty of the Pacific Northwest as it unfolds before the eyes of two intrepid captains who face the daunting task of leading 31 people, including a woman and her infant son, through the still unmapped and, to Americans, unknown interior. 10 a.m. to noon. Visit The Tech Saturdays and Sundays in August for special speakers, events and activities about personal solutions for our global environment. Check out fuel-efficient and zero emission vehicles. Dive into discussions about water and air quality. How do they affect you and your family? Lean about innovative approaches to all your energy needs! August 9 & 10: San Jose Jazz Festival The Tech presents The Tech Youth Stage. 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday. August 21: IMAX Adventure Traveler Series - Polynesian Odyssey This tour of Polynesia starts off with the driving rhythms of the Haka, the Maori war dance, performed by the New Zealand Rugby Club, the All Blacks. Then enjoy the swaying language of the Hula `auana, with stories of nature, legends and royalty. Then, take in the IMAX film, Polynesian Odyssey, tracing the ancient history and cultures of Polynesia from Tonga and Samoa to New Zealand and Hawaii. 5:30-8 p.m. For tickets, call 1-800-847-7730. September 4-7: IMAX Film Festival Back by popular demand, The Tech hosts its second annual IMAX Film Festival. Many of the world's most popular IMAX films will appear for four days only, some of which have never been shown in the Bay Area. Don't miss your chance to see new films like Adrenaline Rush: The Science of Risk, Bugs!, Roar: Lions of the Kalahari and Pulse: A Stomp Odyssey - along with favorites like India: Kingdom of the Tiger, Shackleton's Antarctic Adventure, Mexico and Blue Planet. COMING IN THE FALL New Exhibit Opening October 4: Grossology: The (Impolite) Science of the Human Body, is a science-in-disguise exhibition where kids (and the young at heart) get the answers to many of the slimy, oozy, crusty, stinky questions they absolutely love to ask about the human body. This exhibit has more than 20 interactive displays and games and uses of sophisticated animatronics and imaginative exhibits to tell you the good, the bad and the downright ugly about runny noses, body odor and much more. New IMAX Film Opening September 13: Lewis & Clark: Great Journey West With stunning aerial cinematography and meticulous recreations, Lewis & Clark dramatizes the legendary early 19th-century expedition that crossed the uncharted North American West. October 15: Tech Awards Gala The Tech Museum Awards honor innovators and visionaries from around the world who are applying technology to profoundly improve the human condition in the categories of education, equality, environment, health, and economic development. The purpose of The Tech Awards program is to inspire future scientists, technologists, and dreamers to harness the incredible power and promise of technology to solve the challenges that confront us at the dawn of the 21st Century.
