The Tech Museum of Innovation Announces that School Field Trips are now FREE

Press Release Date
Tuesday, 10 April, 2007
The Tech Museum of Innovation, one of the nation's premier science and technology museums, is now offering all schools the field trip experience for free. Prior to this year and similar to most educational museums and institutions, field trips to The Tech required a $6 admission fee per student. This new Free Field Trips initiative is part of The Tech's ongoing efforts to build a strong link between the museum and schools and is made possible through the generosity of donors. "The Tech is much more than a museum; it's an educational institution that strives to inspire innovation," said Peter Friess, president of The Tech. "In this regard, we provide over 250 exhibits and unique educational programs, such as our annual student design engineering Tech Challenge, that aim to augment the formal science curriculum available through both public and private school systems." The Tech Museum of Innovation offers a range of activities for K-12 school groups, including View From Space, a global weather exhibit where visitors can watch hurricane patterns and other meteorological events develop on a 6-foot globe; and Green by Design, an exhibit in the new Energy Gallery, where visitors design and race hybrid cars, play with solar power and experiment with renewable energy. Students also can personalize and continue to enjoy their field trip experience after leaving the museum with The Tech's unique TechTags. Students wear the Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags on their wrists to activate some of the exhibits. The TechTag simultaneously creates personalized web pages capturing photos and activity results as students move from one exhibit to another. Students can access their web pages online after their field trip, and can keep building their individual page after each visit to The Tech. "Hands-on learning is so important, and the resources offered at The Tech can not be replicated in the classroom," said Colleen Wilcox, Ph.D., Santa Clara County Superintendent of Schools. "I encourage every school to take advantage of the free field trip program in an effort to inspire more school-aged youngsters to become tomorrow's innovators." Teachers and field trip organizers can sign up for their free field trip experience at www.thetech.org, or by calling (408) 294-TECH. IMAX films and Labs are also available at special group rates.
