"Virtual Astronomy" Demo at The Tech's Virtual Reality Experience with Congressional Reps. Mike Honda and Zoe Lofgren, July 5

WHO: 15th Congressional District Representative Mike Honda; 16th Congressional District Representative Zoe Lofgren; Tech President Peter Giles WHAT: A colorful, highly visual demonstration linking The Tech's new SGI-powered Virtual Reality Experience with the University of Illinois's National Center for Supercomputing Applications in a real-time Virtual Tour of the Cosmos. Stuart Levy, NCSA senior research programmer, will guide the tour – although he will actually be located in Illinois, thus highlighting the newest remote collaboration technologies. Using the latest scientific data, visualization tools and interfaces, The Tech's new Virtual Reality Experience allows visitors to fly through seamless virtual worlds of dynamically refreshed virtual reality content. Powered by SGI technologies, the Virtual Reality Experience features a state-of-the-art SGI® Onyx® visualization system with an Infinite Reality4™ graphics subsystem, along with three high-resolution projectors focused on a custom-made, immersive curved screen. The Virtual Reality Experience was made possible when the United States Congress recently enacted Reps. Mike Honda and Zoe Lofgren's request for funding under the Consolidated Appropriations Resolution for fiscal year 2003.
