After-School Programs at The Tech Museum
The museum is the perfect place for after school programs. After-school programs qualify for the group rate or may qualify for title 1 funding (certain requirements apply).
Advanced bookings are required to take advantage of these rates or funding.
The Tech Museum enhances students' after-school experience by allowing them to explore a science topic in an interactive, hands-on setting.
Students can explore over 100 hands-on exhibits, interact with our gallery programs, wonder at our IMAX educational movies, and/or get an in-depth, instructor-led lab experience.
Most labs utilize Design Challenge Learning, an exciting, fun process that enables students to engage in an open-ended design process that results in an original solution.
All of our program align with California standards of learning.
This fall, the museum will be open extended hours on Fridays until 9:00 p.m.
Daily Gallery program at 3:30 p.m (no extra charge).
Educational film at 4:00 p.m only $4.00 per person.
Labs Timing: October to February, Fridays only
Choose from 4 45-minute labs
Cost: only $125 per lab. Labs hold up to 32 students.
Labs will start at 3:30 p.m.
After-School Labs for 2011-2012
Opposites Attract
In this class, students will get a chance to discover the properties of magnetism through investigation and experimentation. Students will learn the basic relationship between electric current and magnetism, and then use that knowledge to build a functional electromagnet!
California Content Standards: Grade 3: 1b-d Grade 4: 1b-g Grade 5: 1c Grade 8: 3a: Grades 9-12: 5f-g, 5j.
Catch the Buzz
In this class, students learn basic principles of electricity, including conductors, insulators, circuits and switches. Students will get a chance to apply their knowledge by constructing electronic circuits of varying complexity!
California Content Standards: Grade 3: 1b-d Grade 4: 1a, 1g Grade 5: 1c Grade 6: 3a Grade 7: 6a Grade 8: 3a: Grades 9-12: 4a, 5c.
Eye Spy
In this class students learn about the energy of light! We start with the basic properties of waves, and define exactly what light is. Then we explore the behavior of light as it collides with various materials. In addition, we explore light, color, and vision with several investigative experiments!
California Content Standards:Grade 3: 1a-e, 2a-d Grade 4: 1g Grade 6: 3a, 3d, 4b Grade 7: 6a-g Grade 8: 4d Grades 9-12: 4a, 4d,4e.
Boom!
In this class, students learn about the energy of sound waves! We start with the basic properties of waves and define exactly what sound is. Then we explore the behavior of sound as it collides with various materials, and learn how to describe the qualities of a sound scientifically! Finally, students will create their own unique sound devices!
California Content Standards: Grade 3: 1b-e Grade 4: 1a, 1g Grade 6: 3a Grade 7: 5g Grade 8: 3d, 3e: Grades 9-12: 4a, 4d.
