Spectrographs
Spectrographs don't take pictures, they take spectra. A spectrum is a different way of looking at light. The visible light spectrum, for instance, can be broken into individual wavelengths, or colors. By studying individual
wavelengths of radiation coming from a planet, star or galaxy, we can tell many things about those distant objects. We can learn things like the chemical composition, temperature and velocity of the object by studying the colors and patterns displayed in
its spectrum.
