Now that we've learned a little about what causes earthquakes, we can take a closer look at some historical quakes in California.
California has many active faults including the San Andreas fault which sometimes produce large earthquakes.
For this reason there is a very long history of active earthquake research in California to understand how and why earthquakes occur.
