Geologists of the day noted that the strongest shaking within the city occurred on land that had recently been reclaimed from the San Francisco Bay. The fact that soft landfill greatly amplifies the shaking caused by earthquakes was "rediscovered" in 1989 when the Loma Prieta earthquake wreaked havoc on the North Beach and Marina districts.
