Joyce Gemperlein has worked as a news reporter in Pittsburgh, Pa., Washington, D.C. and San Jose. She has covered everything from Capitol Hill politics to the sex lives of pandas Ling Ling and Sing Sing, to the trial of John Hinckley Jr., to the aftermath of the 1989 earthquake in Northern California.
She arrived in California in 1987 as a John S. Knight Fellow at Stanford University, then traveled in Asia and settled in San Jose, joining the Mercury News as a reporter in 1989.
A graduate of a San Francisco culinary school, she is currently on maternity leave from her job as Food Editor of the Mercury News and is working as a freelance writer. One of her regular columns, All You Can Eat, appears weekly in West, the Mercury News' Sunday magazine.
