Mariel Haag, 17, is a senior at Prospect High School, managing editor of editorials for the school paper and former captain of the varsity cheerleading squad. Along with holding a part-time job as a receptionist at a gym, she enjoys hiking, singing, participating in her church youth group, playing piano and dancing ("mostly tap and jazz for 10 years").
This year, Mariel was selected Miss Teen San Jose and later this month, she will be competing in the state-wide pageant. "There's no swimsuit stuff," she explains. "It's based on achievements in school and community. But we will be modeling evening gowns."
Mariel was recently accepted at University of California, Santa Cruz which she will enter in the fall with an undeclared major. "I'm thinking about maybe journalism down the line," she says. "I really enjoy writing."
