Asimovs
Three
Laws of Robotics
Scientist-turned-writer
Isaac Asimov wrote many science fiction tales that featured robots
as characters. In Asimovs stories, the robots were guided
by a set of rules, called "The Three laws of Robotics,"
which prevented robots from harming people. They are:
1.
A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow
a human being to come to harm.
2.
A robot must obey the orders given to it by human beings, except
where such orders would conflict with the first law.
3.
A robot must protect its own existence, as long as this does not
conflict with the first two laws.
Although
Asimov wrote these laws as fiction in the 1940s, before robots
existed, they reflect ongoing concerns that some people have about
robots. Technically, destructive technologies like "smart"
cruise missiles (which can be considered robots) are already violating
Asimovs laws.
