Tech Topics: Electricity: Safety survey

Now that you have learned about electrical safety, print out our Safety Survey and conduct an inspection of your own home.

1.	Inspect the electrical appliance cords in your home.
	Are they frayed or damaged?
	Are any wrapped with electrical tape?
	Do any feel warm?

2.	Look at the electrical appliances in your kitchen and bathroom.
	Are any too close to a sink, shower or tub?
	Are there puddles of water near appliances?

3.	Look at the outlets throughout your home.
	Are the outlets you're not using uncovered?

4.	Do you have anything on top of your TV, radio, CD player, or other appliance?

5.	Do you have any outlets or power strips that have too many cords plugged into them?

6.	Are trees growing too close to power lines outside your home?

7.	Are there unlocked transformer boxes near your home?

If you answered "yes" to any of the questions, ask an adult to take care of the problem. You may need to print out some of the information in this unit to show them why you may have a problem.
