DNA is not hard to find. It is in the cells of almost anything you see. There are some simple ways of breaking through the cell and nuclear walls and releasing the DNA. If you are working at HOME check out DNA in your kitchen. This site has an explanation for isolating DNA using common household items.

If you are at SCHOOL, try this DNA Extraction Lab. The purpose is to isolate DNA from the cells of cow thymus gland, also known as "sweetbreads".

Here's what you'll need:

Cow thymus (check a local butcher) cut into small pieces

 

Sand

 

Water (distilled is preferred)

 

Dish soap

 

Rubbing Alcohol (kept cold)

Mortar and Pestle

 

Test Tube (small)

 

Graduated Cylinder (small, 1-20 ml)

 

Stir Rod (glass or wood)

 

Tweezers

 

Magnifying glass or microscope
