Judging Criteria

Tech Challenge Judges will use the following criteria as a basis for their decisions when scoring a team's entry.

Device Judging

Operation/ performance
The team's device operates smoothly and in accordance with the spirit of The Tech Challenge. It quickly and effortlessly searches for and retrieves the fish. Transitions are seamless and safe.

Control System
Team has an extremely well functioning control system.

Resets
No resets or second starts are required to complete the challenge.

Teamwork
All members of the team contribute and have clear and significant contributions to the success of the challenge.

Design Journal and Methodology Review (DMR) Judging

Presentation/ Project Plan
Team is clearly prepared for DMR and demonstrates a well-planned presentation.

Team shows evidence of a well thought out project plan that exemplifies the spirit of the Tech Challenge. Plan includes meeting notes, development schedule, budgets, assignments and tasks-all clearly recorded at an age appropriate level.

Research/ Brainstorming
The team has clearly demonstrated and can show recorded evidence of a design process that has involved brainstorming sessions resulting in the generation of a wide range of inventive ideas. Team creativity of thinking and design is clearly evident.

Prototyping/ Calculations
There is recorded evidence of multiple design ideas being prototyped and tested, leading to discoveries, rethinking and alterations in the design. Age appropriate calculations have been performed to influence the design, while technical judgment and decision-making skills are also clearly exhibited.

Construction/ Safety
Final device is constructed with a broad range of safe construction techniques that uniquely reflects the team's craftsmanship and ingenuity. Redundant systems and safety features are also included to ensure optimal operational success.
