Team Advisors

The Future Needs You!

Wanted: Creative problem solvers to inspire and advise the next generation of innovators!

We are recruiting, screening and matching adults to volunteer in partner schools and community organizations servicing traditionally underrepresented students to provide them with the adult support needed to participate in Tech Challenge. Classroom teachers and youth leaders will play an important role in co-managing this project with you.

Commitment

December 2003 - April 24, 2004, approximately 2 hours/week*
*Can be negotiated with your teacher or youth leader.


Advisor Teacher

Role
You will have the exciting challenge of guiding your team through its problem-solving process! From brainstorming to building an inventive solution, you will help to draw out your team's creative potential and to develop each student's problem-solving skills.

Role
You will support the work of the volunteer advisor and co-manage the team during the design process. You will help the volunteers understand how to work with students and assist students between volunteer visits.

Responsibilities
  • Share your "technical" expertise with students
  • Work with your site's educator to determine the plan of action for working with students
  • Advise your team on their project
Responsibilities
  • Help in the communication and teamwork between students and volunteers
  • Assist the volunteers in communicating with parents when necessary
  • Coordinate an initial meeting with your group of volunteers to determine plan of action for working in the classroom
  • Oversee the relationship between the team and the advisor
Shared Responsibilities (Advisor & Teacher)
  • Facilitate your team's problem-solving process
  • Teach team members about teamwork, project planning, experimentation, and data analysis
  • Find materials for the construction of the solution
  • Attend Training for new Advisors in November or February
  • Attend the Information Clinic with your team
  • Attend at least one Test Trial with your team
  • Participate in The Big Day!

To support new advisors in this unique experience, these are the programs we've created:

  • Test trials
  • Mentoring from seasoned advisors and other volunteer engineers
