Open Make @ The Tech: Flight

Most Open Make events are held inside The Tech Studio, our innovative new space for prototoyping, making, and learning.


 
Maker-led activities: Rocket-building
10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
Led by Rick Schertle
 
Ever since this project appeared in the pages of MAKE Magazine, thousands of people all over the world have been blasting these paper and tape rockets hundreds of feet in the air. Join project designer Rick Schertle in building your own rocket out of paper and tape, then test it on Rick's ingenious compressed air launcher! This is a drop-in workshop session with slots for 35 makers at a time.
 
Free with museum admission. 
 
Meet-the-Makers: Flight
12:30 – 1:30 p.m.



Meet-the-Makers as they share their passions for making, followed by a Q&A session. The talks bring together Makers leading flight activities, Young Makers working on flight projects for Maker Faire, and professional Makers from flight industry.
 
Maker leading flight activities:
Rick Schertle, middle school teacher, MAKE Magazine contributor, and Young Makers South Bay Region Coordinator.
 
Maker from flight industry:
Chris Anderson, CEO of 3D Robotics, Founder of DIY Drones, former Editor of Wired Magazine, The Economist, Nature, and Science, Founder of GeekDad.
 
Young Makers:
Team Viper, experienced Young Makers who built a full-motion flight simulator into a plane fuselage for last year’s Maker Faire.

Maker Moderator:
Dale Dougherty, Founder of MAKE Magazine, Maker Faire, Maker Education Initiative, and Maker Media.

Free with museum admission. We expect a high turn-out, so arrive early for seats.
 
Young Makers Plussing Session #2
2:00–3:00 p.m.
 
An opportunity for students in Young Makers clubs working on a project for Maker Faire to share their ideas, progress, challenges, and next steps with other participants. (Plussing is a term used at Pixar to mean "finding what's good about an idea and making it even better").

For registered Young Makers and their mentors. Learn how to join a Young Makers club. Young Makers get free museum admission on Open Make days +1 adult mentor. Additional family members get into the museum at the group rates.
 
For the love of flight, build in time to make more flying machines for our Ready, Set, Fly! program in our Hands-on Science Workshop.
