Star Wars®: Where Science Meets Imagination
Closed on Sunday, March 23, 2014

This 10,000-square-foot exhibition explores the futuristic technologies depicted in the Star Wars films: -- the real science behind them, and the research that might someday lead to real-life versions of the technologies seen in the series.

This interactive science and technology exhibition explores two major themes—“Getting Around” and “Robots and People,” as well as 2 minor themes—“Adapting to Environments” and “Robots and Medicine.”

See more than 80 authentic costumes, models, and props from all 6 Star Wars films plus interactive exhibits and design labs related to real-world technologies. Topics range from space travel, mechanical prosthetics, robotics, and levitation technology. Defy gravity, manipulate robots, engineer droids, and lots more.

Star Wars Costumes and Props

Authentic costumes and props include the Yoda puppet, C-3PO, R2-D2, the Chewbacca costume, and the three-section Darth Vader helmet from Revenge of the Sith.  Luke's original landspeeder from Episode IV A New Hope is on public exhibit for the first time, alongside scale models of X- and Y-wing starfighters and the Millennium Falcon. Visitors will also see an original Yoda puppet from the classic trilogy and Darth Vader's actual helmet from Episode III Revenge of the Sith.  There are also costumes for Mace Windu, Princess Leia, Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi and the Stormtroopers, and Lightsabers belonging to Luke, Obi-Wan, Darth Maul and Count Dooku.

Building Communities and Augmented Reality
Visitors build a spaceport, moisture farm community and walled Jawa town. Placing cards on a table—the physical landscape—a computer superimposes a building on a site in virtual reality and real time.

Real World Starships
Visitors will see actual vehicles and prototypes researchers and engineers in our own world have developed.

Real World Robots
Today's task-oriented robots and humanoid robots like Troody are on display in the exhibit. Visitors will get to see a floor-vacuuming Roomba that can sense its surroundings and plug itself in to recharge, as well as early ancestors such as the Johns Hopkins Beast, developed in the 1960s.

Getting Around

Examine Luke Skywalker's original landspeeder from Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope. Then, find out how things move without touching the ground in the real world, from models of flying cars to commercial space planes.

Robots and People

Meet C-3PO and R2-D2.  Explore how people relate to the robots in Star Wars. The exhibition also features real-world robots that navigate and sense the world around them while communicating in increasingly sophisticated ways. These robots include the dinosaur-like Troody and a floor-vacuuming Roomba.

Design Labs

The exhibition culminates in two multi-station Engineering Design Labs where you can design, build and test solutions to challenges.

Maglev Engineering Design Lab
Experiment with magnetic levitation - imagining, creating and testing a floating maglev car by propelling it along a magnetic track.

Robot Engineering Design Lab
Be a robot designer! Select wheels or treads, choose different kinds of sensors, and many other custom choices as you create a robot!

New Hands-On Science Workshop: Jedi™ Tech

The science behind Star Wars® becomes reality in The Tech’s hands-on workshops. Techsabers – where visitors will tinker with circuitry, LEDs, and various light diffusing and reflecting materials – and Skywalker Writing You where guests leverage “the Force” for intergalactic light paintings and control their own hovercrafts.

A long time ago, in a workshop far, far away....
Innovators came to tinker with Star Wars-themed art, science, and technology.
Come to the LED side and unleash your inner-Jedi!
(LED = Light Emitting Diode)

Techsabers

Ever wanted to know more about the technology inside that lightsaber you’ve been eyeing at the toy store? Build a lightsaber as you tinker with circuits, switches, and LEDs. Swing your saber to make light paintings that capture your saber’s tracks as it swings through the air. Even if a true Star Wars laser sword with a blade of pure plasma in a force containment field defies our current understanding of physics, we still want to make one!

Skywalker Writing

Build, test, and iterate on flying hovercrafts with LEDs attached. See what you can design to light up and hover in our special flight chamber that captures the technological tracks of your hovercraft through long exposure photography. Leverage "the Force" for your intergalactic light paintings and experience the power of sensors and actuators as you control the movements of your hovercraft with a waive of your hand.

Take a four-and-a-half minute presentation – with the requisite rumbling sound effects, fans, and lights – as you learn about real-world space exploration from Anthony Daniels, the voice of C-3PO. This multimedia experience explores what we know about our own galaxy in a breathtaking journey to the edge of the universe.

Featuring a proprietary sound system from Bose Corporation, the recreated cockpit showcases the technologies of Bose® 3Space® audio systems.

The Millennium Falcon experience is four-and-a-half minutes in duration and accommodates 4 visitors at a time.
