The following lessons were developed to support school and afterschool programs to engage all students in engineering and to help build up to The Tech Challenge 2016.
Ant-Man Saves the Day
Students will start exploring flight by participating in a design challenge which will help them activate prior knowledge about flight and introduce them to engineering design concepts and vocabulary. They will then work on building oral and written communication skills by engaging in narrative writing which encompasses an explanation of their engineering design
Lighter than Air
Scientists often need to gather information in order to form solutions to problems. Can you design an aircraft to help scientists gather information in areas of the world that can only be observed from above?
Engineering Takes Flight
During this lesson, students need to design an aircraft that can rescue people and deliver medical supplies to a flooded island. Students will test the flight characteristics of different materials and apply this knowledge to solve the given problem. Students will document and present their optimal aircraft design.
Hoop Glider Design Challenge
Students will design and launch a hoop glider to soar through the air! Students will test and observe flight characteristics of gliders and then use fractions (4th-5th ) or ratios and proportions (6th-8th ) to design the ultimate glider!
Students work in teams to design, build, and test various launching systems and compare results to determine the optimal solution.
