A senior at Archbishop Mitty High School, 17-year-old John Leyba is editor-in-chief of the school newspaper, sings in the jazz choir, played the lead in the school production of West Side Story and runs varsity cross-country. He is a National Merit semifinalist and an Advanced Placement Scholar. A volunteer at the Tech Museum of Innovation, John has been tinkering with computers since he was a young boy. During vacations, he works in software development and other technical jobs for TCI International, a radio systems company.
After graduation, John plans on attending either Harvard or Dartmouth and majoring in computer engineering and philosophy. He often concludes his e-mail with a quote from E.E. Cummings:
"to be yourself, in a world that tries, night and day, to make you just like everyone else -- is to fight the greatest battle there ever is to fight, and never stop fighting"
