Red Hot (2013) is equal parts robotic player piano and kinetic sculpture. Perform a conductor’s gesture in front of the motion sensor to activate the piano’s motley collection of kinetic hardware: dampers, solenoids, pluckers, hammers, and bow wheels work together to sound out a collection of familiar tunes.
Concept and sculpture by Trimpin. Musical arrangement and compositions by Trimpin, Mason Hook, Colin Horrocks, Zachary Mariano, and Richard James Savery. Gestural interaction by Dimitri Diakopolous.
Created with Baby grand piano, electro mechanical actuators, micro controllers, stereoscopic camera, wireless midi sequencer.
Red Hot was commissioned by the Philharmonic Society of Orange County.
