Letter to the Community

May 22, 2024, San Jose, CA

As a public-serving institution, The Tech is committed to meaningful communication with our community, which includes the individuals who comprise our staff, board, members, visitors, and volunteers. In this spirit, we are sharing information about recent strategic decisions aimed at securing the long term sustainability and vibrancy of our institution.

Like many cultural institutions post-pandemic, revenue streams, including general admission tickets, membership fees and contributed revenues have been lower than anticipated, and federal relief funding has expired. To align with our attendance patterns and to better serve our community sustainably for the longer term, we have developed a new seasonal operating model for The Tech Interactive. This includes strategically timed closures in slower field trip months and dedicated focus days for school visits.

As we chart this course of growth and renewal, we recognize the need for strategic alignment within our organization. Regrettably, this will involve a reduction of 10% in our staff. These decisions have been made with great care and consideration, with a focus on preserving our ability to fulfill our mission effectively and to allow us to expand our core programs to serve more people.

I want to express my gratitude for the community's support of The Tech. Together, we are designing a vibrant and sustainable future, one that will allow us to continue to make an impact in our community and beyond. I invite you to join us on this journey as we embark on our next chapter of innovation.

Sincerely,

Katrina Stevens
