Alebrijes Arrive in Downtown San Jose

August 14, 2025

See towering, glowing sculptures from Oaxaca in the plaza outside The Tech Interactive, on view through September 28.

If you’ve walked past The Tech Interactive recently, you’ve probably noticed them: Towering, otherworldly creatures glowing in vibrant colors, their intricate patterns swirling under the San Jose sun (and even more spectacular, under the night sky). They are alebrijes, a dazzling fusion of Mexican folk art, imagination, and cultural heritage, and they’ve arrived in San Jose as part of Alebrijes en San José.

Standing up to 22 feet tall, each sculpture is a fantastical hybrid, part real animal, part mythical invention, crafted by master artisans from Oaxaca and Mexico City. The art form traces its roots back to the 1930s, when artist Pedro Linares López dreamed of strange, magical creatures calling out “Alebrijes!” and brought them to life in papier-mâché. Over time, Oaxacan artists adapted the craft using copal wood, weaving in Zapotec and other indigenous influences.

The pieces now gracing our plaza are made of weather-resistant fiberglass and lit by an LED system that makes them truly come alive at night. Each weighs over a ton, stabilized for long-term outdoor display, and tells a unique story of craft, community, and culture. Scan the QR codes on each sculpture to learn more about its artist, inspiration, and the traditions behind it.

We’re thrilled that The Tech Interactive is one of the exhibition’s hosts, bringing this rich blend of art, science, and storytelling to our visitors right at our doorstep. Much like our own mission to spark curiosity and innovation, these alebrijes invite you to imagine the impossible, explore new perspectives, and celebrate the creative power of human expression.
